Dan Ladner, conductor of the Caribou Choral Society retired from conducting after their Christmas concert last December, completing nearly 50 years in that position. The CCS was started by Ladner as a one-off concert for the U.S. Bicentennial celebration in 1976. But after that concert, the demand for more concerts continued so Ladner contacted the members of the group to ask if they would be willing to continue. The members wholeheartedly agreed and the group has been performing a Spring and Winter concert ever since; minus, of course a couple of years off during the government-contrived, fake COVID-19 “pandemic.”

Long-time CCS pianist, Mari-Jo Hedman was tapped to be Ladner's replacement in the conductor position. Hedman has conducted school choirs in the past, most notably the Fort Fairfield High School choir and Jazz choir.

“l have been very blessed to be able to continue Dan's legacy. So, Dan decided to retire after our Christmas season and I was voted in as being a person trying to cary on his legacy. You will be seeing and hearing from Dan a little bit later. He's still here, he's still part of our group,” said Mrs. Hedman during the group's Spring concert at Grant Memorial United Methodist Church in Presque Isle. “This has not only been a change for me, it's been a change for the group, and it's going to be a change for the audience. This group behind me has been just phenomenal and we've had a lot of fun, we've had a lot of laughs and I hope that shows in our performance.”

While continuing the tradition of the CCS Mrs. Hedman said she plans to put her own stamp on the group's presentations. “I didn't know what I was going to choose for music but one of the board members said to me, and I believe it was Mary Ellen Trainer, 'you have big shoes to fill. Now, I know you can fill them but don't do it Dan's way, do it your way.'"

“This still is the Caribou Choral Society. This would not be the group that it is today had he not started that way back in the day. We are very blessed to be able to continue that.”

Sherry Calhoun is the new accompanist for the group, replacing Hedman at the piano. “Sherry has brought a breath of fresh air into this group. She's been so enjoyable, so much fun and she can play anything. She's going to make us sound great. We could not have done this without her, so I just really appreciate her.”
